Any true Harley Davidson fan would agree that the company simply hasn’t been bringing out the stuff that they were a couple of years ago. But while this fact remains, only a true Harley fan would be truly angry about the Chinese replicas that are about to hit the market.

The all-American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson came dangerously close to folding in the early 1980s, as anyone who knows their history will tell you. Willie G. Davidson, the grandson of Harley-founder, Davidson’s staged a dramatic, last-minute bailout to save the company.

The procedure started with updating the V-twin engine, the beating heart of any Harley-Davidson. The Evolution V-twin, created by Willie G. Davidson, replaced the pushrod Shovelhead and Ironhead engines. In the end, this was the engine that saved Harley-Davidson from oblivion. It was used to run nearly every Harley off the production line, and it came in two different sizes to accommodate different needs.

Stricter pollution regulations led to its eventual demise in some markets following its 1984 introduction. It’s bad that the Evo’s torque and sound aren’t truly matched in the newer motors that Harley has pushed out because many Harley purists would prefer them to the ones offered in the newer models. However, Shineray is recreating the Evo powertrain now. It’s kind of like that. The latest offering from the Chinese manufacturer is the air-cooled Shineray V1200 V-twin, which is aesthetically and mechanically identical to the Harley Evo engine.

Just by taking a glance at Shineray’s new V-twin engine, you can tell where the company got its ideas. However, if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that all the specifics from the Harley engine are still there. For one thing, the Shineray engine keeps Harley’s signature 45-degree cylinder bank angle. The location of the oil tank, the rocker covers, the chrome pushrod covers, and everything else is identical because it uses the same air-cooling system.

It appears to have the same bore and stroke as the Harley engine, suggesting even closer connections. However, its compression ratio of 9.1:1 is lower than that of the Harley’s 10:1. That means it has marginally less output than the original model. Comparing the Shineray V1200, which produces 60 hp and 66.4 lb-ft, to the Evo, which, in its most recent incarnation found in the Harley-Davidson 48, produces 67 hp and 73 lb-ft, there is a clear winner. The 0-62 mph time that Shineray claims can be achieved in 4.5 seconds is meaningless at this stage because we don’t know which motorcycles will be powered by this engine. The new engine is put through its paces in front of an audience in a stand in Shineray’s promotional video, and it sounds great. One major concern is whether or not it shares the same issues that plagued the Evo engine. The lightweight aluminum casings of the Harley Evo engine are rumored to be incompatible with higher power output. After years of riders piling on extra horsepower, the bike’s casings would often crack or the studs would be yanked clean out of the bottom. However, if the manufacturer is to be believed, the Shineray engine does have certain upgrades.

Shineray claims that the V1200 V-twin was constructed to exacting standards using state-of-the-art, automated gear. The firm also states that due to the increased structural stability, crank strength, and other factors, the engine’s durability is increased by 25% when used at high RPMs for extended periods of time. We think the Harley Evolution engine is a good point of comparison.
