Smokin’ Joe Petrali and Rollie Free are probably two of the best motorcycle riders you have never heard of. How do they stack up today and against each other? Find out more about an intriquing pair of riders who were outrageously famous during their eras, but are little more than a curious footnote now. This is the second of a series of motorcycle tales where we’ll take a short journey back in time -this time to the 1920s, 30s and 40s – to re-examine some motorcyling history. We’ll debunk some motorycing myths, challenge some allegedly iron-clad truths and, hopefully, give a fresh perspective on what are some accepted motorcycle facts based on brittle truths and shallow research.

@ Blue Marble Rider • Thank You immensely for brilliantly covering this story, I have seen the photo for over 40 years without know the story of the man and the myth. behind it! You definitely earned my following!
In looking at that iconic photo of Rollie Free laying flat out, going flat out, on the Salt Flats, I have never figured out where or how he positioned his big brass balls so as to be invisible to the camera. Imagine if he had dumped the bike… road rash with salt rubbed into the wounds. Makes my knees go weak.
Wonderful video
And people think drivers in NASCAR live dangerously! Beautiful history thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the video and RIDE SAFE!
