This Volkswagen Bus is Faster than 99% of Cars on the Streets!

One thing we loved about our trip to Santa Pod Raceway was the variety cars that were fast that looked like they shouldn’t be. Like this old Volkswagen Bus, van, truck, or whatever you want to call it – we’re still undecided. It has a billet, air-cooled, 3.0L rear mounted engine, it’s shaped like a brick, and manages to crack 8 second passes in the quarter mile. Who wouldn’t love that?

  1. i never thought a vw kombi/ute with a vw boxer 4 cylinder would ever run 8s. Even with its bigass drag wheels, parachute, turbo etc, I'm still gonna call this a sleeper. Props to the owner. Cool dude with a super cool vehicle

  2. My father had a 1959 VW Bus with the same color. It was the base model – simply a tin can with a motor and three bench seats. It had a headliner over the front seat but behind that only a single sheet of metal. No insulation be the engine compartment, so we had to yell at each other while driving. Right after he bought it, he backed into a pole and dented the car precisely between two side windows. Then he backed into another pole and creased the back bumper. A week later, did it again in the same spot. We had to step on the bumper to open the engine compartment. Then someone stole the hubcap off the front left wheel. While I was in the Army, he bought a second 1959 VW Bus in the same color. He was proud to send me the photo of both cars sitting side-by-side. I have no idea why he did that. The engine was so wimpy, it had the accelleration of a semi. Had to wait until there were no cars on the horizon before pulling out into traffic.

  3. That's very fast for a modified VW 4-cylinde new guy that built one of the first big bore stroke using corvair barrels and pistons with the small journal rods chey. Spacers under the barrels because the Rods so long.
