Once upon a time, iron men in plastic cars roamed the countryside, spewing smoke and flames into the air and creating an automotive spectacle that’s nearly impossible to describe to anyone who wasn’t there and didn’t experience it live.
Unfortunately, nearly all of the video from that era was cleaned up and edited down to where the essence of the machines and the scenes they created was lost in the process.
Luckily we found a few clips from the archives of Englishtown New Jersey’s legendary and now defunct Raceway Park that give a much better feel for what these things were really like, along with a few of the television commercials from the era that drew tens of thousands of people to the stands anytime the “ground pounding, nitro guzzling, rompin-stompin Funny Cars” were in town.
