“Friendly beat him in number two. He ran into me like a sawyer!”

That’s the first thing you hear when the cameras fire up and the pickup tires start singing—because on Neutral Drop we don’t warm up, we jump straight into the madness. I’m your ever-confused Cameraman (“Cameraman here, folks!”) and today’s card is a heavyweight street scrap: Junk Man in a crusty blue 2004 Ford F-150 Heritage vs. Stunt Man in a rotted-to-the-rockers 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. Two drivers, two half-dead trucks, one skinny street between them, and me stuck in the middle yelling, “When I drop my hand, you guys GO!”

The rules are simple enough for a fifth-grader (that’s me):

Drag race forward from the pole to the big maple tree.

No-Mercy Reversie drag race back to the pole.

If you survive, red-line Neutral-Drop your truck until something quits, flips, or catches fire.

Sounds easy—until Stunt Man shows up wearing Crocs with white socks (yes, really), Junk Man laughs so hard he forgets to buckle up, and both trucks reveal more rot than a Halloween pumpkin. The Ram’s quarter panel waves in the breeze; the Ford’s bedside crunches like a bag of chips. Yet both heroes swear they’re “ready to make cash, earn money now” by turning rust into views.

I stage them like old Fountain Avenue nights: brake torqued, engines clawing. My hand drops—BAM! Stunt Man slams first, Ram howls, and the Ford bites back, pushing the Dodge sideways. They bounce mirrors, smash pizza-topping paint, and Junk Man hollers, “He ran into me like a sawyer!” (Nobody knows what that means, but it sounds painful.) At the tree Stunt Man edges ahead, but the return leg is all Junk Man: he finds reverse, digs in, and shoves the Ram backward until Stunt Man’s bumper kisses the start pole. Score: Ford 1, Dodge 0.

Round two? Forget rules—Stunt Man neutral-drops the Ram right into Junk Man’s door, rips off a headlight, and sends me dodging flying chrome. Junk Man retaliates by lighting up all four wheels, the bed literally smoking. “R stands for Really Not Working!” he screams as his reverse gear disappears. Stunt Man laughs until the Ram coughs, spits, and loses all forward gears. Now both rigs are crippled, tires flapping like flip-flops, but neither driver will quit.

Enter the Neutral Drop Challenge: rev to the moon, slam to reverse, and let fate decide. Junk Man floors the Ford—5,000 RPM of free-rev fury—drops the lever and the Heritage EXPLODES forward, hops a curb, and lands six feet off the ground. I swear I saw daylight under every tire. “Always wear your seat belts, kids!” he wheezes, white as a ghost. Stunt Man tries the same, but the Ram only coughs and dumps its transmission guts on the ground. The crowd (one confused passerby asking, “Will that work on my wife?”) goes wild.

When the dust settles, what’s left?

A Ford with a missing eyeball and permanent pizza-topping paint chips.

A Dodge with no reverse, shredded quarter, and transmission parts twinkling on the asphalt.

Two brothers still yelling, “You suck!” and “There was a rock in my Croc!”

Me, checking the footage and praying YouTube counts every smoky second.
