A dreary rain set in over the Fuji Speedway during the 1998 All-Japan Grand Touring Championship. A thick wall of fog and relentless, heavy rain blanketed the racetrack in almost unmanageable conditions. Then, an accident between a Porsche and Ferrari changed the course of Japanese racing forever. How did racing in Japan go from boring to world-wide phenomenon? How did punishing drivers that won lead to better racing? And, how did a 1997 Chevy Cavalier wind up in the middle of a Japanese race? Today on Past Gas, the history of racing in Japan and some of the stories behind the All-Japan Grand Touring Championship.

I'm Here!
Congrats on the play button! Well deserved!!
I believe gold is still one of the best heat reflectors, that's why the James Webb Space Telescope (which views in infrared) has gold plated beryllium primary mirrors.
Toyota actually came out with a right hand drive Cavalier it was identical!
Aww man 2 hours and there are no Cavaliers for sale anywhere around me. Couldn't be the rust, it must be the Donut effect!
Congrats on that play button, here's to the gold!
Hold up. I've always wondered what auto insurerers think of their clients driving for Uber, but now I really want to know how tf you get auto insurance on your personal vehicle that you're listing on Turo.
Bring back science garage!
can we talk about how Nolan almost put his glasses on upside down at the start of the episode?
I enjoyed the episode the hosts always bring great energy and fun riffing but the actual script wasnt the best in this one.
Road car facts mixed in with the race specs and jumping around between years that didn't make sense, it didn't read well out aloud and got confusing at times.
Just constructive criticism from a well meaning fan, who ever wrote this episode needs to be a little more careful with fact checking and layout presentation just to keep things clear for listeners aside from that really enjoy the podcast.
Yesssss I been waiting for this one
Tom cruse drove a chevy lumina in the rental car scene in days of thunder and his stock car was also a lumina
finally a video onJGTC/SuperGT
I just want to say nolan handles being interrupted repeatedly like a champ.
Hate to say it but the script missed the mark on this episode. There’s been so many unique and awe inspiring cars that have appeared in JGTC, but instead were given a spec sheet rundown on the McLaren F1 road car? Hate to say it but the mark was missed. Also James and the other guy need to chill with all the BS cause it’s not funny at all and I’d rather hear the story you’re trying to tell than your 1/10 comedy attempts.
Congrats on the Play Button. Missing the irony about mocking Mississippi re: evolution and discussing vehicles the were intentionally designed. Lol
