The street car shootout scene has been thriving for more than 30 years after it went mainstream with the original HOT ROD Magazine Top 10 Shootout in Memphis. In that time there have been several niches carved out and one of them is small tire, street car shootouts. A long competitor on the scene, Marshall Carpenter, took a ride to FuelTech USA in Georgia so he could sort out his 1979 Mustang LX coupe on the Mainline Hub Dyno.
FuelTech USA offers a comprehensive Advanced Dyno Training Session. The service is designed to give FuelTech customers a day at the Georgia headquarters to learn about their PowerFT engine management system and test their vehicle on the dyno. The FuelTech customer service staff, led by Cameron Lohrmann, helps identify any problems and a professional driver slips behind the wheel for the full power testing. The company also provides lunch and a professionally curated disk with video and photos of your experience.
For Carpenter, this was invaluable as a switch to methanol caused some teething issues and a failed trip to the track cost him time and money. Signing up for the Advanced Dyno Training Session allowed him to solve problems and make a significant amount of dyno pulls; far more WOT tuning pulls than if they rented the drag strip. The team requested their results be kept quiet but were willing to share details of the new combination.
Carpenter relies on a Titus Engineering engine block, which is based on a Ford Cleveland engine but with a lot more features like a raised camshaft location. The small-block Ford was then topped with a pair of Hammerhead Hemi cylinder heads! This Mustang was run with twin turbos, mounted in the backseat, for many years, however, a single turbocharger is now responsible for the boost. Carpenter said it was easier to compete at local shootouts with the big single turbo as the twin setup was shunned by many groups.
The FT600 stand-alone EFI has been tasked with engine and power management and for good reason. The PowerFT ECU family—FT600, FT550, FT550LITE, and FT450—offers a complete line-up of standard features including sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data logger, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, traction control, and so much more. All ECUs include a closed loop option for advanced and efficient fuel function, aiding in engine safety.
The FT450, FT550, and FT600 ECU units house an LCD display and touchscreen on the actual unit, showing real-time data and allowing the user to adjust the tune without a PC connection. Not only does the ECU display the real-time information from the assortment of sensors wired into the engine management system, all PowerFT ECUs can data log each sensor and that eliminates the need for an additional system to be built into the vehicle. In the case of the FT600, it can record up to 256 channels of data if configured properly.
This turbocharged Hemi utilizes FT720 low impedance fuel injectors and that requires the use of a Peak and Hold 8A/2A injector controller. Applications that run eight injectors utilize two Peak and Hold 8A/2A boxes while combinations that run 16 injectors will need four boxes. FuelTech released its latest injector driver box dubbed the Peak and Hold PRO. This new unit is programmable, allowing the user to adjust the amperage as-per the fuel injector requirements as well as run diagnostics. It is also capable of setting fail-safe thresholds to prevent faulty fuel injectors from causing an engine failure. The new Peak and Hold PRO is a dual-channel box, meaning it can run up to eight fuel injectors and two boxes are needed to run up to 16 injectors.
From the high banks of professional drifting to the hardcore street race style competitions, there is a reason you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere
