If a customer wants perfect gap's you can take a .metal coat hanger and weld it to the edge slowly then file it back for tight gaps but I usually ask before I agree to paint if they want perfect gap's because you know older car's didn't have anywhere close to perfect gaps.
Not trying to coach you here, but i use presta pace buffing compound with a d/a buffer. With this it will remove 1500 scratches no problem. Might save yourself some time and it is very cost effective($35 a quart).
