The owner of this beautiful 1970 Plymouth Satellite Convertible brought us the car to work through some of the problems it has been having with starting and running.
So, we set the camera up on the tripod and went about the process of getting it up and running to show the steps and thought processes involved in sorting through the issues with ignition timing and a bug in its Chinese knockoff BBD carburetor.
Did we get it running? Of course! And here’s how it went.

Excellent troubleshooting. Fun to watch others find this stuff.
Good stuff, glad you did the partial disassembly
Great video but zooming in on specific areas while your diagnosing would be a tremendous help
Ha! You said retarded, gonna get kicked off you tube!
Can I run low boost on a stock bottem end 318.if I oppen the ring gap
I have had the joy of working on q jet 4 barrel carbs and the feed back carbs,2100,2 barrel the 2700vv carburetor and the 300 six feed back carburetor
On the 300 feed back do not forget about the egr valve they leak and you have a rough run easy to miss.
Thank you for that video, very informative
Moving the plug wires out of firing order is not fixing the problem. It’s just getting it to run. Do the job right. Don’t hack it up.
When I was 10 my brother had a 64 belvedere with a 426 wedge camed 456 he new more than I thought he took me to the great lakes drag away he ran 1078 after that a 69 super bee in71 then corvettes 6 of them.when I was in hs I drove his 75 camaro 350 4spd to school bc he worked 3rd shift
I know guys who can put together the best running engines but can't troubleshoot problems like this to save their life. These lessons are pure gold, Uncle Tony!
Thanks Tone, I got something out of this one!
Tony, have you made a video on holley carb accel pump cams? Thanks!
I always use masking tape to remove e clips, press it into the tape before you remove it, it stops them from flying across the room.
Thanks Tony, great example of what over advancing sounds like ..after giving my distributor a power nudge , I now know what sound to look out for if over "nudged" !
chevy black engine compartment, yuch!
I have had issues with needle bypass in carbs for smaller engines and mowers / karts I work on. I always get 2 , but vs oem still cheaper , thats how most roll these days. The quality control on tollerances is non exsistant. I imagine its accross the board with auto as well , or partly. Other than that , no performance complaints. Not always it bjt a start point , I will look at lines better to.
so that rotor is turning clockwise, and you backed it off towards you against the direction to retard the timing? then when vac can prevented more retard you moved each wire one to left on the distributor? thus further retarding it? just checking i have that right?
The mystery charging problem and it turned out to be a bad gauge on the dashboard I connect both wires to one pole and they charge just fine ..I always wondered why the charge gage would yellow over time
Great video Tony
Very informative.
