Ford’s turn.
In 1966 Ford went to Le Mans to settle a grudge with Ferrari and built the GT40 to do it. Everything since has followed the same pattern: Ford builds something too good, and the rulebook gets rewritten to keep it out.
The RS200 was a Group B monster that never got its shot. The category was banned before the car could prove anything. The SVO landed a decade ahead of the audience that would’ve understood it. Then the new Mustang GTD: a street car with downforce and suspension that push past GT3 homologation rules, quick enough around the Nürburgring to out-lap machinery costing three times as much.
Sixty years, one throughline. Ford keeps building faster than the regulations allow, and the establishment keeps moving the line. From the ’66 Le Mans win that inspired Ford v Ferrari, to the 2016 GT class victory, to a Mustang that shouldn’t exist, this is the version of the story that treats the cars as the point of it all. The passion, the persistence, the wins? That’s the why and how we got here part of the story.
