Recipe For A Backyard Built Low Budget, 9 Second Drag & Drive Dodge Dart That Knocks Down 14 MPG


The last time we saw Cody Walker he was busy exploding the Torqueflite in his wife’s BIg Block Chrysler Newport. Today, we dropped by his place to check out his fantastic home brewed Drag Week special 1971 Dodge Dart.
Cody walked (pun intended) us through the cars mechanical features, including it’s 700 horsepower Procharged Small Block, dragged out a box of Transmission shrapnel and introduced us to Happy The Pig.

  1. Awesome dart. The car itself is a great example of low buck, the motor and trans not so much. to be fair going 9 seconds will never be cheap. but it is a great example of do it yourself and have fun.

  2. Do you have any notes or maybe edit from previous clips a video of the max hp on all the experience motors . Keep flogging, just how much have you made , and what is the actual record. Still have foaming. 55%balance? What is perfect, if you remove the vibration hp goes up. And I still see a k jet larger than the engine in the streamlined record bike

  3. And tci converters are the worst on the planet. You think you install these pieces of junk and return them because they are defective…think again.

  4. Okay, it's not a $250k pro drag radial car. But you really can't call this low-budget. He listed every big name in the speed parts book.

  5. I think Tony is emphasizing on the fact that this dude did it outside under a carport. Old school shade tree mechanic. I love it. But yeah he had a lot of money in that drivetrain

  6. Pulled the cam and lifters out of a blown up 360 put them in a 318 bolted to a 4 speed in a 78 d100 ran a 10.13 at Buffalo valley on a street tire oh and 3.55 rear gear lol

  7. Tony my man my friends dad worked at Trenton engine plant in Michigan had a satellite with a 440 six pack was in hotrod magazine for bracket racing working part time at ramchargers. Man Tony Detroit dragway was the place but there's still Milan dragway not far from Brooklyn speedway. I enjoy your show built a 400 with a friend from a imperial or Newport stuffed in a duster minus the slant six.I like four link but we did some configuration with the leaf springs and some fabrication with making rear shakles no wheel hop or pinion snubber.

  8. No mention of the budget on a video that crows about it being a low budget car. With all those top shelf parts it sounds like it would be pretty expensive to me.

  9. Funny to hear about Freiburger saying that: it was an older issue of Car Craft where the project car used lace curtain masking to create a striking paint job.

  10. I met a guy at a brewery in Northern Colorado. He was driving a 64 Valiant 4 door. I asked “Do you watch Uncle Tony?” He said “You bet.”

    low enough compared to my buddy. Only the paint job cost 10k.
    Price tag vs fun he's having?
    Most of the 10sec. Guys only use the car on the strip. He does it on the boulevard.
    For sure his cost is much more than my 5k 66 daily driver pontiac starchief executive but he's better on gas mileage and on ET a long way with my 19.5 feet, 11 mpg, low 14 sec-389ci.
    I have more paint tho! I hot rod it a bit with a home made custom 3 tones black roof, dark cherry red sides and big silver rainbow that cut the eye effect of 4 doors to 2 doors. Maybe 5 pounds of paint that had up the weight to around 4405 with me. Hahaha
    I wish i had a little plumbing like that sometime but my compression is too high at 10.5 and the connecting rods in those 389ci could not take it. I aint got the budget to rebuild the engine with that set up so im enjoying every little bit of the 425 foot pounds of torque untill its very end.
    That's the single father of 2 littles girls budget life!

  12. The part that the drum fits into (with the large tabs) is called a sun shell. The sun gear and ring gear fit (well that's one system anyway) inside.
