Do you have any pictures of your 57? They have always been my favorite cars, I have one I'm starting to put together with a 327. Kevin's 55 sure sounds good.
The 3G weighs more because copper is heavier than aluminum.
Even if you don't consider output, the 3G is just a better quality alternator than the 2G.
And the 2G can be (sorta) setup for one wire operation. But it just makes it even more lame than it already is.
